Newspapers

North Otago Times   (incorporating)

Oamaru Times and Waitaki Reporter August 1864 - August 1879
  October 1883 - July 1932

(Less 'newsy' than its urban brother but had a much wider coverage). This newspaper is in the process of being microfilmed. Available up to 1906 on the National Library's Papers Past site.

North Otago Standard 1876 - 1878
Oamaru Mail  1876 - 1994

An evening paper which ran in opposition to the morning North Otago Times. It tended to concentrate mostly on the urban resident but had regular correspondents from the townships.  The "Editors Column" is an excellent source of obituaries and also mentions interesting events.

The Oamaru Mail has been microfilmed up to 1939 by the National Library. Birth, Death and Marriage notices from the newspapers have been indexed, up to 1930, by the local branch of the Genealogical Society.

For the area below Herbert, or for obituaries you should consult Dunedin's Otago Times and Witness - forerunner to the Otago Daily Times. These are held by the Dunedin Library but, like the 'Oamaru Mail', may be ordered from your local library using the 'interloan' system.

New Zealand Government Gazettes  -  1854 - 1980

An excellent untapped resource.
Covering land transfers, settlement of towns, naturalisation of foreigners, governmental postings, intestate and missing persons.
